Looking after it

Five minutes of maintenance is the difference between a season and years.

After every sweaty session

A damp cloth over the surface. Sweat left to dry is what leaves a film and, eventually, an odour.

Weekly

Lift the mat and sweep underneath. Grit that works its way under any mat is what scratches floors — the mat itself will not.

Cleaning products

Warm water, or warm water with a little washing-up liquid. Avoid solvent-based cleaners, bleach and oil-based floor polishes, all of which degrade PVC over time.

Storage between uses

Fold along the existing crease lines and stand it on edge or lay it flat. Do not roll it — rolling against the creases is what makes a mat refuse to lie flat.

Temperature

Keep it above freezing. PVC stiffens in cold garages and is more likely to crack at a crease if folded while very cold; let it warm up first.

Troubleshooting

The corners curl up after unboxing

Normal for a folded mat. Lay it flat at room temperature for a few hours, or weight the corners overnight with books. Warmth speeds this up considerably.

It has a plastic smell

New PVC carries a faint manufacturing odour. Unfold it in a ventilated room for a day or two and it dissipates.

The machine still rocks on carpet

The pile is too deep or uneven. Put a thin rigid board — plywood or MDF — under the mat to create a flat plane, then the mat on top.

The mat slides on the floor

Almost always dust between the mat and the floor. Sweep the floor, wipe the underside of the mat, and the texture will grip as intended.

Neighbours still hear the treadmill

A mat cuts structure-borne vibration, not airborne motor noise. If the complaint is a hum through the ceiling, check the machine is not touching a wall or skirting board, which reintroduces a direct path into the structure.

There is a faint indentation in the mat where the feet sat

That is the mat doing its job — taking the compression instead of your floor. It relaxes over a day or two once the machine is moved.
